SUMMARY:Kayaking River Clean-Up @ Kingman Island
DESCRIPTION:An Evening On The Anacostia River \nThe Reservoir Center continues to advance our key pillars of education and community engagement. Most recently\, we partnered with Living Classrooms and the Washington\, D.C. Department of Energy and Environment for an evening of kayaking and cleanup on the Anacostia River. \nAfter a brief introduction to the program and safety training\, participants used kayaks to collect trash. \nIn all\, we removed a lot of trash\, and the data gathered from this program is critical to informing policy and education focused on reducing litter that washes into the river. It was wonderful to meet so many people who share our passion for the river and reducing marine pollution.

SUMMARY:Reservoir Center Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:Thank you to everyone who joined us for a Reservoir Center night at the movies! It was a fun and informative evening filled with impressive films and great networking. The movies’ screened were water-focused documentaries “Upstream\, Downriver” and “A River Out of Time”. \n“Upstream\, Downriver” takes viewers into the heart of the battle for water justice. Powerful stories with frontline community activists are interwoven with historical context about landmark regulations that significantly reduced water pollution in the U.S. but failed to serve disadvantaged communities that are hardest hit by today’s climate crisis. \n“A River Out of Time” follows a crew of scientists\, artists\, educators\, and river lovers on a trip that was simultaneously a celebration of modern river life and a critical look at how we interpret the Colorado River’s history and use its waters. In 1869\, a small group of surveyors led by John Wesley Powell set out to map the unknown extent of the Colorado River Basin. 150 years later\, this team set out to raft in Powell’s footsteps in an effort to reevaluate Powell’s legacy\, absorb the unquantifiable power of place\, and articulate what the future may hold for water in the American West. \nFernando Castro-Alvarez\, Regional Liaison for the Bureau of Reclamation\, provided an in-depth overview of the challenges and opportunities facing the Colorado River\, along with sharing his personal connection to the water challenges confronting the western U.S. Visitors were treated to pizza\, local craft beer\, and popcorn. We hope you can join us for our next movie night! \nSpecial thanks to our event co-hosts: Anacostia Riverkeeper\, Association of State Drinking Water Administrators (ASDWA)\, Women’s Aquatic Network\, Potomac Riverkeeper Network \n                        \n

SUMMARY:Work in Water Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Work in Water Open House proved to be a smashing success and included more than 40 D.C. public high school students and volunteers representing an array of Reservoir Center partners and local water service providers. \nThe event helped students understand water challenges in their communities and allowed them to meet the people working to solve them. Students rotated through 10 activity stations designed to open their eyes to the world of water\, ranging from digital water management challenges and water tower builds to mentorship with local university students and fun\, blindfolded puzzle stations. \nThe afternoon included a panel of young professionals who shared their experiences working in the water sector\, giving our guests ideas for how people of all skills and interests can contribute to positively impacting their community – and communities around the world – with clean water and sanitation.

SUMMARY:Solar Eclipse Watch Party & Community Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:The Reservoir Center was happy to host 28 participants to watch the partial solar eclipse in Washington\, DC. The Reservoir Center distributed solar eclipse glasses to all as we gathered on the lawn in the Capital Riverfront Park to view the eclipse. We were graced with wonderful weather (high in the low 70s) and limited cloud cover to visualize an 87% eclipse of the sun. A member of our group even brought a telescope with appropriate solar tinting to capture images of the special event. \nAfter the maximum eclipse had passed a portion of our group walked along the Anacostia River collecting trash and recycling to beautify our Navy Yard neighborhood. After an hour of cleaning up the community\, we refreshed those calories lost by having an ice cream social outside of the Ice Cream Jubilee\, which is right outside of our Reservoir Center property. Again\, given the beautiful weather we were able to enjoy our treats outside where we were able to continue the engaging conversation on our respective interests during this upcoming water week. \nWe want to thank everyone who participated. \n\n\n\n\n	\n	\n	\n \n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024 \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 8\, 2024

SUMMARY:Rising Water Professionals - Great Falls Hike & Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hike and lunch in Great Falls\, Maryland! We’ll start our hike from Old Angler’s Inn and head along the Potomac for a short hike. We’ll pass by the Washington Aqueduct\, DC’s first public water system built in 1853\, and continue to Great Falls Overlook to take in the sights.   \nFrom here\, we’ll have the option to head back to Angler’s either along the Canal’s towpath or a more strenuous route along the water. Once back at Anglers\, we’ll celebrate our triumph of the trail with drinks and lunch! The hike will take 1-2hrs depending on which return route the group chooses. Be sure to pack sunscreen and wear appropriate shoes.  \nAttendance is limited to 12 hikers\, so sign up ASAP.  \n  \n\n \n Email(Required)\n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Title(Required)Company(Required)PhoneTerms and Conditions:(Required)\n \n \n I agree to the terms and conditions.\n By registering for this event\, I agree to be added to the Reservoir Center Mailing List. SUMMARY:Kayak Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:20 Rising Water Professionals enjoyed a beautiful evening paddling on the Anacostia River and picking up trash. Common trash items collected and noted on their trash BINGO cards included: bottle caps\, wrappers\, plastic bottles\, plastic bags\, Styrofoam pieces\, glass bottles\, and cans. Some not so common items included a child’s doll and a full bottle of perfume. \nWhile cleanups like this don’t help stop trash from ending up in the river\, we hope events like this help make participants\, and those that they seem picking up trash\, think about how these items get in the river and what can be done to ensure trash doesn’t end up in our water ways. \n\n\n\n\n	\n	\n	\n \n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
